I hail from a family where we’re all staunch followers of the mantra “YOLO: You Only Live Once” and “Go With The Flow”. We’re not ones to go through intense planning before we do something, but rather dive head first into it. We seek bliss in the unchartered territories of expecting the unexpected. Recently we took a road trip at the “spur of the moment” and that’s what got me thinking about spontaneity and how all I’ve heard are its negative aspects. So I’m here today to present before you the other side of the coin.
Spontaneity keeps you on your toes and teaches you how to adapt to different life situations. Where’s the fun in following your regular eat, sleep, repeat schedule? Don’t get me wrong. Planning is essential ,but it is also important to understand that not everything has to go by schedule and that it’s okay to deviate from it at times.
The magic word here is “Yes”. Say yes to that sudden plan instead of saying “No I’m tired”. You’d be surprised at how many incredible opportunities you might miss out on just because you’re too comfortable in your little bubble.
Striking the right balance between planning and improvising is crucial to live a fulfilling life. It’s about knowing when to throw away the to-do list and just “live life”. Life’s unscripted moments have the potential to become one of your favourite memories. It’s time we wake up from auto pilot mode and just dive into some unexpected adventure.
Spontaneity also acts as a stress reliever. Sometimes sticking to a schedule might lead to burnout and engaging in a sudden act of embracing the unknown might just be the “dopamine release” you were looking for.
Embrace the chaos and take a detour once in a while. So next time you’re stuck between choosing to stay at home or taking up that impromptu invite, remember life is too short to be mundane. Just say yes and hope for the best.
